JCCP Activities in the Balkan region

A civil war broke out in the Balkan region from 1991 to 2000. During the breakup of the multinational country of Yugoslavia, conflict intensified between the countries that wanted to become independent and the countries that were against it, leading to the civil war. Former Yugoslavia was made up of six republics: Serbia, Macedonia,Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro. Though different ethnic groups lived together before the civil war, the civil war intensified the conflict between different ethnic groups and caused a lot of casualties. The situation has calmed down; however there are still some regions where people have prejudice against other ethnic groups or where the situation is unstable.
