GBV emergency response strategy outside of PoCs
Posted in June, 2014
JCCP has launched a project for the prevention of and response to cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and the enhancement of people’s awareness and resilience at camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) outside the United Nations Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites in Juba, South Sudan.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in December 2013, many women and children have fled from their communities as IDPs. Women and girls are left vulnerable and are in higher risk of experiencing GBV. Although sporadic emergency relief has been provided, comprehensive support with a view to the capacity building of local stakeholders and the sustainability of the relief effort is needed.
This project targets 5,000 IDPs at three camps and their host communities through a six-month intervention. We will implement the following activities:
1. Distribution of dignity kits to GBV survivors and other vulnerable women and girls to help them improve their livelihood and prevent GBV;
2. Training the staff of GBV referral entry points (medical, judicial and police experts) to improve their knowledge of GBV, their related referral pathways and their various systems of support and care, as well as encouraging greater cooperation between referral entry points;
3. Strengthening the GBV response and prevention system at the community level through the training of IDP focal points, awareness raising of IDPs and support for women’s groups.
This project is supported by Japan Platform (JPF) as well as individual donors.
